West Indies legend Brian Lara advised Umran Malik and said that he needs to learn quickly that it is hard to make the best players suffer with speed.

While speaking on the ‘Wake Up With Sorabh’ YouTube channel, Brian Lara said that Umran will be a sensational bowler but needs to bring variations in his bowl or else it will be tough for him to make a batsman suffer with speed.

Lara further added that the 23-year-old Indian pacer is very young and has a lot of years left in his career.

“He will be a sensation, but very quickly he will have to learn that fast bowling really does not trouble the best players in the world. You have to have the ability to do something with the ball, be sensible, and maybe understand times when you have to trickle back or understand the times when you have to up the tempo. He is very young and has got a lot of years ahead of him,” Brian Lara said on Umran Malik.

If he works with Dale Steyn…: Brian Lara on Umran Malik

Lara added that if Umran Malik continues to practice with Dale Steyn, then the pacer will get to learn many tricks which will help him in the future.

The Caribbean also talked about Wasim Akram, Malcolm Marshall, and other legendary fast bowlers who had different types of pace but always brought variations in their bowling style to take wickets.

“We have had so many different examples. Wasim Akram was a raw pace, Malcolm Marshall had a destructive pace, and Michael Holding. But they all know that at some point in time, they had to come up with a lot more tricks than just being able to bowl fast. If he (Umran Malik) works with Dale Steyn, he could definitely be one of the best India could produce,” Lara added.

Umran Malik made his debut for India in 2022 against Ireland in the T20I format and played eight matches in the 20-over format and scalped 11 wickets. In the ODI format, he appeared in 10 games and took 13 wickets.

Umran Malik last played for India in the second ODI match against West Indies at Kensington Oval, where he failed to take any wickets and gave away 42 runs.
