Former India batsman Aakash Chopra has questioned Rinku Singh’s non-selection in the India squad for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies. The Ajit Agarkar-led panel announced India’s 15-member squad on Wednesday (July 5).
India are scheduled to play five T20Is against West Indies after the conclusion of the Test and the ODI series. Rinku’s absence has been questioned by many as the southpaw was expected by many to make it to the squad after his stunning campaign in IPL 2023.
Rinku impressed one and all with his finishing abilities as he scored almost 500 runs while batting in the lower middle order. He hit five sixes in the final over against Gujarat Titans to fire Kolkata Knight Riders to one of the most famous wins in the history of the IPL. Those performances, however, were not enough for him to seal a spot in the Indian team.
Aakash Chopra comments on India’s T20I squad:
Aakash Chopra took to Twitter to give his views on the India squad for the West Indies T20Is. The former cricketer-turned-commentator began by stating that India’s bowling attack ‘looks a little thin’. Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, and captain Hardik Pandya will shoulder the bowling responsibility.
He also stated that the selectors have not left out too many deserving players before questioning Rinku’s absence. Chopra also commented on the batting order and opined that he would not like to see the batsman batting lower than number 4.
“Fast bowling looks a little thin. While it’s understandable to question the players selected, not many names who deserve are left out. Cabinet is a little bare. (Assuming Chahar’s return is getting managed).
“Rinku Singh’s non-selection is a different thing though. SKY, Sanju, Pandya at 3-4-5?? Tilak at 6? Or open with Ishan and play Tilak at 4? Personally, I don’t like Tilak batting lower than 4. Just my thought,” wrote Aakash Chopra.
