Tilak Varma has played three crucial knocks for India in the first three T20Is against West Indies. He scored 39 in the first T20I, 51 in the second, and 49* in the third which came in a winning cause.

So far in the series, Varma is the highest run-scoter with 139 runs from three matches at an average of 69.50. He has been the glue between the top and the lower order. His free-scoring style of scoring runs allowed Suryakumar Yadav to be his attacking self in the third T20I.

Hardik Pandya also trusted him to stay unbeaten in the third T20I which he did and did not disappoint. Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer backed him to play ODI cricket as well seeing his maturity at number four.

Meanwhile, heading into the fourth T20I, Tilak is eyeing up a record of his own. With 139 runs in the first three games, the southpaw is second after Deepak Hooda with most runs after three T20I innings. Now he has a chance to overtake the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in this elite list.

Kohli is fourth on the list with 231 runs against England in 2021. Tilak needs 93 more runs to overtake him and take his position at number four in this unique list. He needs 79 more runs to overtake KL Rahul’s tally of 227 runs to eclipse him.

Ball Was Slow And Getting Stuck On The Pitch: Tilak Varma

Varma returned unbeaten on 49 and missed his second T20I fifty in three innings by just one run. Skipper Hardik Pandya was criticized for robbing the chance for Tilak to score a well-deserved fifty.

“I was enjoying my batting and also enjoyed watching him (Suryakumar) batting from the other end. The ball was too slow and was getting stuck. I talked to Gill (Shubman Gill) after the game ended and asked what was so different in Surya’s batting. I just could not fathom the shots he played and on seeing that, I wanted to hit some big shots too” said Tilak after the match.

The fourth and fifth T20I will be played on Saturday (August 12) and Sunday (August 13) respectively. India needs to win both matches to win the series.
