Former India captain, Krisnamachari (Kris) Srikkanth backs Rohit Sharma to continue to play with his instincts instead of changing his style of play. Rohit made his return to Test cricket in the Sydney Test against Australia where he struck a brilliant fifty.

In the first innings of the Brisbane Test, Rohit got out trying to hit Nathan Lyon by coming down the track – he lobbed the ball up in the air and was caught. Rohit received a lot of flak for throwing his wicket away at the score of 44 and not converting his start into a big score.

His scores of 6 and 12 in the first Test against England in Chennai have also not gone down well with some people – especially as Mayank Agarwal is benched after disappointing returns with the bat in Australia, however, dropping someone based on just a single series isn’t fair as Agarwal has been in terrific form in the last home season.

Rohit Sharma is an experienced campaigner and knows his job: Kris Srikkanth

Kris Srikkanth comes to Rohit’s defence and has full trust in the ‘classy’ opener. The 1983 World Cup-winning opener says that once Rohit Sharma is set he is well and capable of piling up a big score. Srikkanth reckons there is no need for the Mumbai Indians skipper to tinked with his attacking style of play and should cash in on any opportunity presented by the bowler.

“Rohit is a class player. He should not tinker with his style and play his natural game. He is an experienced campaigner and knows his job. He (Rohit) knows how to pace his game. Once he gets set, it is a delight to watch as he is a natural stoke maker,” said Srikkanth, as quoted by the New Indian Express.

After the loss in the first Test – India’s first home Test defeat in 4 years – Rohit Sharma will have the onus to make use of the batting-friendly pitch in the first innings. Being a senior player, the 33-year-old will be expected to take more responsibility to avenge the first Test defeat keeping India in contention for the World Test Championship final.
