India's bowling coach Paras Mhambrey told to stay away from Jasprit Bumrah reveals Axar Patel
Allrounder Axar Patel has uncovered the reason behind Jasprit Bumrah's tremendous success in the T20 World Cup 2024. Bumrah has been in superb form with the ball for the past few months.
Before the World Cup, he had a fantastic IPL as well in which he was the standout performer for Mumbai Indians with 18 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of just 6.48.
Bumrah has been already adjudged the Player of the Match in India's two out of four matches this tournament so far. With the road likely to get tougher in the upcoming games, his role is going to be vital going forward.
'He has an idea of what to do' - Axar Patel on Jasprit Bumrah
While speaking at the post-match press conference after India's win over Afghanistan in their first Super 8 clash in Barbados, the left-arm spinner revealed the reason behind Jasprit Bumrah's success. According to Axar, India's bowling coach Paras Mhambrey doesn't interfere too much with Jasprit Bumrah as the latter has a fair idea of what to do in various situations.
"I don't think anyone talks much about Bumrah's bowling. He has an idea of what to do and what not to do. So I think when it is going so well, I don't think the bowling coach is giving so much input that there is some confusion in his mind."
"He just says that you are doing well, whatever thinking you are doing is also going well. So, I think, as much as I have seen, the bowling coach doesn't interfere much. He says this during planning that whatever your mindset is, it is clear, so just execute your plans," Axar said.
Jasprit Bumrah was lethal with the ball against Afghanistan as he picked up 3-7 in four overs. Bumrah bowled with absolute accuracy and was almost impossible to hit on the day. His wickets tally included the big wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Hazratullah Zazai, and Najibullah Zadran.
Axar Patel produces an all-round masterclass
Meanwhile, Axar Patel himself had a great game with both bat and ball. Firstly, Axar smashed a quickfire 12 off 6 balls to help India reach the 180-run mark. Then, with the ball, he struck in his first over and removed Ibrahim Zadran cheaply. The left-arm spinner finished with 1-15 in three overs.
Axar was brought in as the first change as he replaced Jasprit Bumrah despite the latter picking up a wicket in his first over. He also spoke about how he managed to keep up the good work by Bumrah when he came on to bowl.
"See, obviously Jasprit Bumrah is a world-class bowler, and you know that with the quality of bowlers we have on our side - we can get out of a tough situation. So, at that time you have to think about what you have, what is your strength, what are your weaknesses. So don't think much about what the other bowler did, like you said in partnerships we should bowl like this, Axar explained.
"I was just thinking that on this wicket what works for me? Like, after 1-2 balls, I realized that if I change the pace and length, it is better on this wicket. That’s what I was doing," he added.
India have a quick turnaround time for their next match, which will be held on June 22 in Antigua against Bangladesh. The Men in Blue will then move to St. Lucia for their final Super 8 match against Australia.
