On Monday, by pinning Dan Lawrence plumb for an lbw dismissal, Ishant Sharma picked his 300th Test wicket. The pacer made his debut for India in Tests in 2007 against Bangladesh in Dhaka.
Ishant Sharma is the senior-most member of the Indian side currently, and have been part of some of the historic victories such as the one in Lord’s 2014 and India’s maiden Test series win in Australia in 2018-19.
Ishant, with a long mane, burst onto the scene with a hostile spell to Ricky Ponting at Perth in 2008; that spell is still fresh in the minds of the fans after all not many bowlers could make the former Australia skipper hoop around the crease.
Ishant Sharma becomes only the third Indian pacer to 300 Test wickets
The 32-year-old snared his 300th scalp in Chennai in his 98th Test match becoming only the third Indian pacer after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan to reach the landmark. Overall, amongst Indians, the Delhi-born seamer is only the 6th player to bag 300 Test scalps.
He has picked 10 four-wicket hauls, 11 five-fors, and a solitary 10-wicket haul (in a match) in his 13-year-Test career hitherto.
The old workhorse is one of the few Indians to have had consistent success in overseas conditions with the ball; Ishant Sharma had picked 43 wickets in England and 31 in Australia, 41 in West Indies, 28 in New Zealand, 20 in South Africa.
Known for his long bowling spells, Ishant has begged 36 wickets combined in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and over a 100 wickets in India where the pitched haven’t been to his favour often.
Currently, legendary former spinner, Anil Kumble is the leading wicket-taker for India followed by Kapil Dav and Harbhajan Singh. Amongst the active players of the team, R Ashwin leads the wickets tally ahead of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma.
