South Africa National Cricket Team were sensational in the T20 World Cup 2024. They dominated the tournament right from the start and were one of the hot favorites to win the tournament. They displayed a magnificent performance with bat and ball and were unbeaten till the final.
South Africa under the leadership of Aiden Markram were top-notch. The Proteas bowlers were the main reasons behind their success as they destroyed the batting lineup of most of the teams and then complimented it well with batting effort.
South Africa's best performance came in the semi-final when they bundled out Afghanistan inside 60 runs and advanced to the final. In the summit clash against India, they were on top of their game for most of the match and it seemed that they would win their first title.
South Africa almost sealed the game against India but they failed to win the match as bowlers of the opposition were exceptional and stole the game away from the Proteas. They failed to handle the pressure and went on to lose the game by 7 runs.
Jacques Kallis talked about the incredible month for the South Africa team and lauded them for reaching the final, which the team has never done before. He although admitted that the Aiden Markram-led side would be thinking about how they bottled the chase as they would've won 19 times out of 20. Speaking to Sports Tak, he stated:
"Yeah, that's been a good month and a bad month, as you say. It would have been nice to have won that World Cup, but I think the guys have excelled, you know, certainly gone further than any other South African team. So yeah, I think they've done well and can be proud of their performance"
“I think South Africa will probably look back at it and say it's one that they lost. Having been in that position, he probably win that 19 times out of 20. And unfortunately, it was just one of those days where it was one of those games where you lose it."
That's a thing in tournaments like that, you need little things like that to go your way - Jacques Kallis on Suryakumar Yadav's catch
Jacques Kallis also talked about Suryakumar Yadav's catch to remove David Miller in the over and stated that things like these are needed to win the tournament. He said that small things didn't go the Proteas way. He elaborated:
“That's a thing in tournaments like that, you need little things like that to go your way. You need lots of stars to align to win a tournament like that. But as I said, I think South Africa's done well to get that final and anything can happen on the day and you just need little things to go your way, which unfortunately, those small things didn't," he concluded.
