South African opener Janneman Malan has won the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award for his excellent run in the white-ball – particularly the 5-over format.

Malan debuted for the Proteas back in 2019 but he rose to prominence in 2021, where he scored 715 runs in 17 international matches (8 ODIs and 9 T20Is) at an average of 47.66 and a strike rate of 101.85.

In the process, he also scored two hundreds and three fifties. Malan scored the fourth-highest score by a South African in the ODI series against Ireland in Dublin. He amassed 177 runs in the knock where he also shared a record partnership of 225 runs for the opening wicket with Quinton de Kock.

South African keeper De Kock praised his opening partner after their opening partnership set the tone for the run chase against India in the second ODI.

Chasing 288, the duo put on 132 runs on the board which turned out to be the difference-maker. They were able to chase down the target with more than an over to spare and seven wickets in their kitty.

He is one of the best batters in the world when he gets going, so it was good to bat with him,” de Kock said.

Malan scored 91 in the knock after a rare failure in the first ODI. He now averages 69 with the bat in 14 matches, having amassed a total of 759 runs in the format.
