South Africa spin bowler Keshav Maharaj is likely to miss cricket for a lengthy spell after rupturing his left Achilles tendon in his left heel during the second Test match between South Africa and the West Indies. Keshav Maharaj suffered a freak injury while celebrating the wicket of Kyle Mayers on the stroke of lunch on the fourth day of the match.

South Africa registered a 284-run victory over West Indies in the second Test and completed a clean sweep of the two-match series at The Wanderers. Keshav Maharaj Is In Danger Of Missing The World Cup

Maharaj collapsed to the ground when he started off on his celebratory run after Kyle Mayers was given out following a review by the Proteas. He was taken from the Wanderers’ ground on a stretcher to the hospital. Scans revealed significant damage, and he needs to undergo surgery. Cricket South Africa confirmed he will meet a surgeon on Monday, which could keep him out for 4-6 months.

According to multiple reports, Keshav Maharaj is expected to miss the upcoming ODI World Cup due to an injury. The World Cup will be hosted in India between October and November later this year. South Africa’s spinner may not be able to make it to the marquee event. He will not be able to fulfil his commitments with Middlesex and the T20 Blast and will instead focus on his rehab.

Maharaj is the first-choice bowler for the Proteas in the longer format of the game. He played 49 Tests and picked up 158 wickets, including nine-fer in an innings in Sri Lanka. The left-arm spinner has only played 27 ODIs since his debut in 2017. He had a chance to make it into the World Cup squad with the tournament taking place in spin bowling conditions in India.
