A court in Kolkata has ordered Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami to pay INR 1.3 lakh in alimony to his former wife, Hasin Jahan on Monday, January 23. INR 50,000 will be paid to Hasin as personal maintenance, and the remaining INR 80,000 will be paid for the education of their daughter, who is living with her.
Hasin Jahan and Mohammad Shami have been in a long legal battle, and they have been living separately since 2018 as their divorce case is still pending. The couple has been at the center of controversy since Jahan reported that Shami and his family members had committed domestic violence in 2018. Shami denied the allegations, and he was briefly released from his national contract after Jahan made allegations of match-fixing.

Hasin Jahan had filed a suit in court in 2018 demanding a monthly maintenance of INR 10 lakh. She will receive a personal alimony payment of Rs. 7,00,000, while the rest of the Rs. 3,000,000 will go toward their daughter’s maintenance costs.
Her attorney, Mriganka Mistry, informed the court that the Indian pacer’s annual income for the fiscal year 2020–21 was over NIR 7 crore and that the demand for a monthly alimony payment of NIR 10 lakhs was not unreasonable. While thanking the court, Mistry stated that her client would have been happier if she had received the amount of alimony, but conceded that she could appeal the amount to a higher court.

Shami’s lawyer, Selim Rahman, said it was inappropriate for Hasin to demand such substantial maintenance as she had a reliable source of income from her employment as a professional fashion model. The lower court on Monday fixed the monthly alimony payment at INR 1.30 lakh after hearing from both parties. Hasin expressed her gratitude for the court’s order but insisted that the payment of large alimony was more relief for her. The Indian pacer did not respond to this count till the report was submitted.
“Congratulations. A memorable victory. Thanks to our Tigers for helping the country win. This had to happen; the country’s reputation and honour are protected by honest patriots rather than criminals and womanisers,” she had captioned her post.
