Mithali Raj To Join Team Gujarat In WPL As Mentor – Reports

Former India Women’s National Cricket Team captain Mithali Raj is all set to join the Ahmedabad-based franchise, which is likely to be known as the Gujarat Giants, in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) as a mentor for the inaugural edition of the tournament, according to a report published in News18.

Mithali Raj announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket on June 8. She played 232 ODIs, 12 Tests and 89 T20Is for the India Women’s National Cricket Team and scored 7805 runs at an average of 50.7 in ODIs, 699 runs at an average of 43.68 in Tests and 2364 runs at an average of 37.52 in T20Is.

After her retirement, the legendary cricketer kept her options open to feature in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

The WPL is likely to be played from March 4 to 24 and recently the BCCI sold the teams at an auction in Mumbai, with the owners of Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, as well as the Adani Group and Capri Holdings winning the bids. The Ahmedabad franchise was bought by Adani Group for the highest price – INR 1289 crore (USD 158 million approx).

Mithali Raj was keen to play but there was a lack of interest from the teams – Mithali Raj

A source has revealed that Mithali Raj was keen to feature in the Women’s Premier League as a player, but the franchises were not interested in acquiring her. As a result, she will now be taking up the role of a mentor for the Gujarat Giants in the competition.

“Mithali Raj was keen to play but there was a lack of interest from the teams. She will now be turning up for the Gujarat team as the mentor,” a source close to the developments told News18 Cricketnext.

“Yes there was interest from her side to play, particularly for the team based out of Mumbai but things didn’t quite materialise the way she would have wanted and a lucrative role with the Gujarat team came her way,” the source added.
