Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has recalled an incident when MS Dhoni got the better of England‘s Kevin Pietersen through his words. While MS Dhoni’s cricketing skills are undoubtedly sharp – ranging from his taking the bowlers to the cleaners, lightning-fast keeping skills, to innovative tactics as captain – the 39-year old also maintains a strong sense of wittiness. Robin Uthappa revealed that Dhoni’s antics were regarding a Test match between India and England in 2011 at the Lord’s.
During the game, Kevin Pietersen was adjudged as out by the umpire when a rare moment entailed MS Dhoni rolling his arms. The former England captain immediately took the DRS and replays showed that he did not edge the ball. Hence, the umpire had to reverse the on-field decision. Eventually, Pietersen scored a first-innings double-hundred as the hosts won it by a massive margin of 196 runs.
Robin Uthappa remembered MS Dhoni telling Kevin Pietersen to shut his mouth as the former Indian skipper told him to shut his mouth since he dismissed him. Uthappa believes it is proof enough for what he supports and what he does not. The former Indian batsman reckoned that Dhoni’s wit has the same speed as his glovework or it could be quicker.
“I’ll give you an example. MS said to Kevin Pietersen when he sledged him from the commentary box. MS told him ‘listen I’ve gotten your wicket so please keep quiet. So, I think that is proof enough for what he endorses and what he doesn’t. He’s very quick-witted. His wit, if not the same speed of his glove-work, it could be faster. MS’ wit is quick,” Uthappa said during an interaction with stand-up comedian Sorabh Pant on his YouTube channel ‘Wake Up with Sorabh
MS would put me in charge of sledging some of the senior members of that Australia team: Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa also narrated an incident when in 2007 India and Australia played a one-off T20 game. The 35-year old stated that Dhoni put him in charge of sledging one of the senior members of the opposition like Ricky Ponting. Dhoni would tell Uthappa in a One-day match to stand at silly point to chew at Ponting.
“In 2007 when we played a one-off T20 game against Australia, we were at it. MS would put me in charge of sledging some of the senior members of that Australia team like Ricky Ponting. So, in a one-day game, they would make me stand at silly point just to chew Ricky Ponting and all. It was great fun,” he added.
