Mumbai Indians have faced their seventh defeat of the season and are now lagging further in the contest with just two points in nine matches. They are on the brink of elimination, and any loss would surely rule them out of the contest even mathematically, as they have already been ruled out within rational limits.

The Mumbai Indians made a start to this season, ending their 13-year-long jinx of losing the first match of every season. However, this time they started with a win but have then lost four matches in a row.

The Hardik Pandya-led side bounced back with Tilak Varma doing some bit of run-scoring while the MI bowlers did the best they could the only time in the season against the Gujarat Titans. They have once again been scanty on wins since that win against GT.

Mumbai Indians' second defeat against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026

Mumbai's biggest concern is their poor form at their home ground, Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai once again clashed against their arch-rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, after having lost their previous match against the Super Kings at their home ground.

MI have now lost another three matches in a row after their defeat to the Chennai Super Kings. In the last three games, they have lost two matches against CSK. Super Kings bowled first and helped them get an early upper hand over the visitors.

Naman Dhir's half-century helped them to gather 159 runs, while Ruturaj Gaikwad, the skipper's second half-century this season, and a massive 98-run partnership alongside youngster Kartik Sharma helped CSK to their eighth point of the competition as they advance back to the sixth position.

Do Mumbai Indians still stand a chance to make it to the playoffs in IPL 2026?

Mumbai has now lost seven matches, which means they have lost 50% of their matches destined to be played in the group stage of the IPL. Having played nine matches, they are left to play just five more matches this season.

Though 16 points is considered a safe block for teams to qualify for the playoffs, Mumbai have formerly qualified with just 14 points and might aim for a similar stance this time as well. However, in order to finish with just 14 points, they should win all of their remaining matches.

However, Mumbai will largely have to work to better their net run rate and will also have to fancy their chances depending on other teams' performance. Currently, they have a very poor net run rate of -0.803, but for all this to happen, many teams like the Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, and the Delhi Capitals will have to lose all of their remaining matches.

Mumbai Indians' remaining schedule comprises of some vital clashes against heavywieghts

The Mumbai Indians have five matches left in this season. The matches include some high-value matches, which include their clash against massive heavyweights like the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, and the Rajasthan Royals.

Any further losses would surely eliminate them from the contest, as their chances to reach even the 14-point mark will be doomed. There are two other matches, including one against the weaker opposition in Lucknow Super Giants and the other against the Kolkata Knight Riders, whom they defeated back in their opening game.
