Pakistan’s Test series loss at home against England saw a complete overhaul of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Ramiz Raja stepped down as the PCB chief and was replaced by Najam Sethi. Babar Azam, however, was retained as captain and backed to deliver the goods.

Pakistan reached the final of the T20 World Cup under his captaincy and lost to England in the summit clash. Meanwhile, Shahid Afridi and Abdu Razzaq are among the new appointments within the PCB. Afridi has made a big comment on Babar and his captaincy keeping in mind the future.

Babar Azam Backbone Of Our Team: Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi was very clear as to what were his expectations from Babar Azam’s captaincy. He said that he wants Babar to join the list of world-class captains in the near future and bring glory to his team.

“Babar Azam is the backbone of our team. We would want him to join the list of world-class captains just the way he is a world-class player. So we are basically here to support him and share our experiences (with him). We think we can help him in certain things where improvement as a captain is possible” said Afridi to the Pakistani media contingent.

Further in his interaction with the media, Afridi revealed that the new selection committee will see every detail that is required for the betterment of the national cricket team. The former Pakistan skipper stressed results after a thorough plan that will be chalked out very soon.

“See we are going to run this selection committee talking everyone together as it is not only a captain’s team. A lot of things that were pointed out earlier, we would like to cover them because we want good results.”

Main Focus Is To Win Test Series Against New Zealand: Babar Azam

After the Test series loss to England, Pakistan are playing against New Zealand in the first Test in Karachi. Heading into the first Test, Babar during his pre-match press conference said that the changes in the PCB will not affect them as they are professionals and are supposed to perform for the country.

“There have been changes but we are not concerned with that, our main focus is to win the series against New Zealand. We have no say in matters of the board,” he said.

Babar further said that interim selector Shahid Afridi asked him to add three more players to the squad for the series against the Kiwis. Likewise, Mir Hamza and Shahnawaz Dahani, and off-spinner, Sajid Khan were added to the squad based on his suggestion.
