Panel Of 5 To Decide Tim Paine's Successor As Australia's Test Captain, Candidates To Be Asked About Their History - Reports

According to the reports, a panel of 5 will be deciding the successor of Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine, and the candidates will be asked about their histories in the interview.

Cricket Australia (CA) will be giving more time and attention in picking the next captain of Australia so that the incidents like ‘ Tim Paine Sexting Scandal’ don’t occur again. When Paine was appointed as a new captain in September 2018, CA was not very strict, and his sexting scandal wasn’t mentioned.

Pat Cummins is most likely to become the new Test captain and Steve Smith as his deputy as they were nominated by national selectors George Bailey, Justin Langer and Tony Dodemaide.

Meanwhile, a panel consisting of CA’s chief executive Nick Hockley, chair Richard Freudenstein, fellow director Mel Jones and selectors will look into nominees before giving them any responsibility.

It is being told that all the nominees will go through an interview process, and they will be asked about their personal histories and vision for the Team.

Some Sources revealed to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald that a panel that was formed during the appointment of captain in 2018 never discussed Paine’s sexting controversy.

The panel consisted of chair David Peever, board director Mark Taylor, then head of team performance Pat Howard, then selection chair Trevor Hohns and fellow selector Greg Chappell, coach Justin Langer and team psychologist Michael Lloyd.

Steve Smith, was involved in a huge ball-tampering incident known as the Sandpaper-gate scandal in the year 2018 during the Test series in South Africa. After captain Steve Smith his deputy David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were found guilty, they were banned from cricket.

Following the Sandpaper-gate scandal, Paine was given the responsibility to lead Australia in red-ball cricket, and Justin Langer became the head coach.

Meanwhile, after getting appointed as a skipper of the Test team in September 2018, Paine said:

“It probably wouldn’t have been my call. We took it very seriously and the players had their say, then there was a [interview] process after that as well, It was not done to tick boxes or anything like that. It was to make sure we had the right people leading this team going forward.”

During that time, Pat Cummins was not the nominee as he was recovering from a back injury. Meanwhile, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and pacer Josh Hazlewood were named as joint vice-captains to Paine. Also, current white-ball captain Aaron Finch, Alex Carey and Travis Head were high in the voting.

“We believe the new leadership model will best support the captain,” Hohns said at the time. “It is a successful model used across various sporting codes around the world, and we see it benefiting the group, not just from a tactical perspective, but also to help drive the team’s values and standards on and off the field.”

“We’ve put in place a process for finding the next Australian captain that was going to take place over the summer in anticipation Tim would one day retire,” CA chairman Richard Freudenstein said on Saturday.

“We’re obviously accelerating that process. It’ll be a very thorough but brief process that will look at all the relevant criteria for a captain of the Australian cricket team. We will come to a conclusion with plenty of time before the Ashes,” he added.
