Former Team India head coach Rahul Dravid recently opened up about his emotional celebrations after the Men in Blue's victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final match.
Rahul Dravid said that he used to try to control his emotions as a coach and added that his emotional celebrations had not been planned.
India secured a seven-run victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final match in Barbados on June 29. The Men in Blue ended their 11-year ICC trophy drought under Rohit Sharma's captaincy.
Notably, it was Dravid's last assignment as head coach. It was his first ICC trophy win as head coach.
The Men in Blue failed to secure victories in the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC) and ODI World Cup 2023.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) granted an extension for Dravid until the T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid and his coaching staff helped the team secure an ICC trophy.
You Don't Plan These Things - Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid said that he was overwhelmed with happiness for the team and support staff, who had worked tirelessly. Dravid mentioned that his emotional reactions during the 2024 T20 World Cup celebrations were not planned.
"You don't plan these things. In most times, I try to keep my emotions in check as a coach and you are expected to do that. But at that time, I felt really happy for the team. I felt happy for the boys. I felt happy for the support staff. So many people who had worked really hard along with me," Dravid said on Star Sports.
Rahul Dravid decided not to apply for his second term as India's head coach after the T20 World Cup due to family commitments. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir took over as coach before the white-ball series against Sri Lanka. India won the T20I series 3-0 but is 1-0 behind in the ODI series.
We Had Come Close A Few Times - Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid stated that the Men in Blue failed to win other ICC tournaments despite coming close under his tenure. The former Indian captain said that luck and destiny played a role in their T20 World Cup victory.
"I had been with the team for 2.5-3 years and we had come close a few times, whether it be the semifinals of the last T20 World Cup in Australia, the World Test Championship final, or the 50-over World Cup final in India, and we were just not able to cross the line in those critical moments. In those situations, you need a little bit of luck, a little bit of destiny to work your way and that day it was with us," Dravid stated in the same conversation.
South Africa seemed poised for their first-ever T20 World Cup victory, as they needed just 30 runs from 30 balls with six wickets in hand.
However, Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh bowled tight overs and shifted the momentum in the Rohit Sharma-led team's favor.
