Young Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi achieved a significant milestone during the fifth and final T20I against Australia in the recently concluded series. Bishnoi equaled veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s record for claiming the most wickets in a bilateral T20I home series.

India clinched a six-run victory in the final T20I at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, December 3. The home team posted a total of 160/8 after being asked to bat first. In response, they successfully defended their score, restricting the Australian team to 154/8.

Ravi Bishnois Equals Ravichandran Ashwin’s T20I Record

Ravi Bishnoi played a crucial role in the final game, picking up two wickets for 29 runs in his four-over quota. The right-arm leg-spinner dismissed Travis Head and Aaron Hardie in the match. He was named Player of the Tournament for his performances throughout the series.

Bishnoi not only bowled economically throughout the series, but he also provided crucial breakthroughs when the team required them the most. The wrist-spinner finished as the top wicket-taker in the series, taking nine wickets at an acceptable economy rate of 8.20.

The 23-year-old equaled Ravichandran Ashwin’s record for the most wickets in a bilateral T20I series by an Indian spinner. Ashwin had achieved this feat by taking nine wickets in a T20I series against Sri Lanka in 2016. He managed to match this record within just 10 months of his T20I debut.

The Rajasthan-born cricketer also became the first Indian player to secure at least one wicket in 10 consecutive T20 Internationals. Prior to his outstanding performances against Australia, he played a pivotal role in India’s gold medal triumph at the Asian Games 2023.

Bishnoi has emerged as a strong contender for a spot in the full-strength Indian XI for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June. He secured a place in the T20I squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa. He was picked ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal for India’s next T20I assignment.
