Sachin Tendulkar‘s legacy in cricket is second to none. Over his 24-year international career, the Mumbai-born legend evolved from a short 16-year-old kid to arguably the greatest batter of all time.
But with success came the pressure. While cricket was just seen as a popular game in India upon Sachin’s debut in 1989, the game turned into a religion for millions in the country, largely because of his record-breaking career.

The pressure of expectations of a giant country like India weighed very heavy on Tendulkar’s shoulders. His early career teammate and now commentator Ravi Shastri has revealed how the Indian maestro was expected to score a century in every match he played, and it would be considered a failure if he didn’t.
“Every time he went out, you know, the entire nation would sit up and watch. When is he going to get a hundred? They treated it as his failure if he didn’t. I know he might have felt very lonely at times. When you reach those heights, it can be a very lonely place to be because you are the only one there who understands what’s happening.”

Shastri discussed this, and how Sachin Tendulkar was, and still is, compared to Australian great Don Bradman in ABC Australia’s documentary ‘Bradman and Tendulkar – the untold story of two of cricket’s giants’.
“You felt that this guy was in a different league now” – Ravi Shastri on watching Sachin Tendulkar bat from the non-striker end
Sachin Tendulkar has played and batted with dozens of Indian players from many generations across his staggering 24-year international career. Ravi Shastri, who was with the Indian National side at the start of Sachin’s career, explains how special it was to watch a teenager dominate some of the world’s best bowling attacks.
“That’s when I first saw greatness from 22 yards. It is one thing getting runs and another thing watching a kid who is 18 years of age dominate an Australian attack like the way he did. You felt that this guy was in a different league now,” said Shastri
Sachin Tendulkar made his debut in 1989 as just a 16-year-old in Karachi, Pakistan, against a lethal bowling attack of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis.
