Barring that Headingley heroics in the Ashes, what has he achieved as a batter?" - Ravichandran Ashwin
Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin had questioned Ben Stokes' credentials as a batter. He said that the England skipper is a fabulous player, but barring his Headingley heroics, he hasn't played any significant knocks with the bat.
"Ben Stokes is a fabulous player. I take my hat off to him. But we need to remember one thing. Barring that Headingley heroics in the Ashes, what has he achieved as a batter?" Ashwin said on his Hindi YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat' after the first two Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
"The readiness to play a Test match in the way a Test match needs to be played—that is the problem from the leadership standpoint. You are telling every batter to go and play an attacking brand of cricket, so you need to play like that only," he said.
Ben Stokes displays a dominant all-round show in Manchester
Before the Manchester Test against India, Stokes didn't fire with the bat but was the top performer for England in the bowling department, and he even won the Player of the Match award in the Lord's Test.
Ben Stokes continued his bowling brilliance in the fourth Test match and bagged a sensational 5-wicket haul to bowl Team India out for 358.
He, then, brought out his best with the bat and slammed a remarkable century on Day 4. Stokes looked unstoppable in the middle and finished his innings with a score of 141 runs to power England to a total of 669 runs.
Arrey sir ji, no one doubted his class! - Ravichandran Ashwin responds to fan
Soon after Ben Stokes hit a century against India, fans on social media were quick to remind Ravichandran Ashwin of his criticism of the English all-rounder.
However, the India bowling great didn't let that go unnoticed and replied to a fan on X. Ravichandran Ashwin clarified that he never doubted the class of the all-rounder, and just highlighted the need for a change in his batting approach
"Arrey sir ji, no one doubted his class! He got his first fifer after 2017 this game a hundred after 2 years! This has come because of his traditional test match approach to batting and not the carefree one he had adopted before this." Ashwin wrote in reply to a fan's criticism.

This has come because of his traditional test match approach to batting and not the carefree one he had adopted before this.
Notably, Stokes' all-round heroics against the India National Cricket Team at Old Trafford have helped him become the first England captain to make a century and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test. Also, he joined Garfield Sobers and Jacques Kallis as the only three players in Test cricket history with a double of 7000 runs and 200 wickets.
