Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has sought clarity from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) regarding his role in the squad for the IPL 2026 season. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the all-rounder has informed the franchise that he is open to moving on if he no longer fits into their future plans.

Chennai Super Kings acquired Ashwin for Rs 9.75 crore at last year’s mega auction. Ashwin returned to his hometown team after eight years. He played nine out of 14 matches and took just seven wickets at an economy rate of 9.12.

It is worth mentioning that this was his most expensive season, surpassing his previous best of 8.49. This was also his first season since his debut in 2009 where he played fewer than 12 games.

Ravichandran Ashwin Seeks Clarity from Chennai Super Kings on Role in IPL 2026

The timeline for releasing players ahead of IPL 2026 depends on the auction date, which is yet to be finalized. While the mega auction occurs every three years, a mini auction will take place between November and February.

Player trades can happen up to a week before the auction. Meanwhile, Ashwin has asked Chennai Super Kings for clarity on his role in the 2026 season and is willing to leave the team if he no longer fits into their plans.

"R Ashwin has asked his team for clarity on how they intend to use him in IPL 2026, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. According to sources, he has told the franchise he doesn't mind parting ways with them if he doesn't fit their plans," the report read.

Ravichandran Ashwin Leaves CSK Amidst Sanju Samson’s Trade Request

Ravichandran Ashwin’s departure from Chennai Super Kings came after reports that Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson requested a trade or release ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

Ashwin began his IPL career with CSK, enjoying great success by winning consecutive titles in 2010 and 2011 under MS Dhoni’s leadership. He was also part of the teams that finished as runners-up in 2012, 2013, and 2015.

Ashwin played for Rising Pune Supergiant (RPSG) in 2016 but missed the 2017 season due to injury. He then represented Punjab Kings (PBKS) for two seasons before joining Delhi Capitals (DC) for 2020 and 2021. Ashwin played for Rajasthan Royals between 2022 and 2024 before returning to CSK in 2025.

Ravichandran Ashwin IPL’s Fifth-Highest Wicket-Taker

Ravichandran Ashwin is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. He has taken 187 wickets from 221 matches at an average of 30.22 and an economy rate of 7.2, with best figures of 4/34. Ashwin is not only a skilled bowler but has also contributed valuable runs, amassing 833 in the league.

CSK invested heavily in Ashwin to help conclude his playing career while also involving him in nurturing talent through the team’s academy. As the franchise goes through a phase of transition, Ashwin’s experience and strong connection to CSK’s culture make him a key figure in the squad.
