India National Cricket Team premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a big revelation, stating that he used to bowl medium pace deliveries during his formative years as he wanted to become India’s next Kapil Dev.
Ashwin recently went past legendary Indian all-rounder and World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, to become India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

He reached this enormous milestone during the first match of the two-match Test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team in Mohali. He dismissed Charith Asalanka to grab his 435th wicket in the purest format of the game to go past legendary India captain Kapil Dev who had 434 wickets in 131 matches.
Now Ashwin is only behind legendary Indian spinner Anil Kumble, who had bagged 619 Test wickets in the enormously successful career.
28 years ago, I was cheering for Kapil Paaji along with my dad – Ravichandran Ashwin
The 35-year-old off-spinner, while reacting to going past Kapil Dev’s tally of wickets, said that he was cheering for legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil when he had gone past New Zealand great Richard Hadlee’s record. He added that even in his wildest dreams he never thought of going past Kapil Dev’s tally of wickets.
“Feeling so humbled. 28 years ago, I was cheering for Kapil Paaji along with my dad when he went past Richard Hadlee’s record,” Ashwin said on his official YouTube channel.
“Even in my wildest dreams, I never thought of going past his tally of wickets. Because I always wanted to be a batsman especially when I started off as an eight-year old. In 1994, batting was my fascination. Sachin Tendulkar was just emerging into the scene and Kapil Dev, himself was a terrific striker of the cricket ball,” the off-spinner recalled.

“In fact, I used to bowl medium pace on my dad’s advice back then so that I can try to be the next Kapil Paaji. From there, to become an off-spinner and to represent India for so many years. In fact, I never thought I will play for India. I am so grateful and so humbled on this achievement,” said Ashwin.
