The Indian senior men’s selection committee is preparing to take key decisions regarding the future roles of Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya. The Ajit Agarkar-led panel will meet on Tuesday, May 19, to plan India’s long-term roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup and select the squads for the Afghanistan series.
India will host Afghanistan for a one-off Test match followed by a three-match ODI series. Shubman Gill is expected to lead the team in the white-ball matches, which will begin on June 14. The selection committee will monitor player fitness and current form while finalizing the squads for the bilateral series.
Ravindra Jadeja Under Pressure as Selectors Review India’s ODI Plans
According to a report by The Times of India, the selection committee is seriously discussing the role of senior players in India’s evolving ODI setup. Ravindra Jadeja’s position has reportedly become a major topic ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The 37-year-old all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja may need strong performances in the upcoming matches to stay in contention for the tournament. The report stated that although the team management still backs Ravindra Jadeja, concerns have grown over his recent impact in ODI cricket.
Selectors are worried about Ravindra Jadeja’s slow batting strike rate and limited wicket-taking returns in the 50-over format. These issues have increased pressure on his place in the squad ahead of the long-term World Cup planning.
After missing the Australia series, Jadeja returned during the ODI assignments against South Africa and New Zealand. Across those two series, he picked up only one wicket in five bowling innings while conceding runs at a high economy rate. He also scored 99 runs in five innings with the bat.

Hardik Pandya’s Workload Under Close Watch Ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup
Apart from the senior players, the selectors are also expected to closely monitor Hardik Pandya’s fitness and workload management. The all-rounder remains a crucial part of India’s ODI plans because of the balance he provides with both bat and ball.
However, Hardik Pandya’s history of injuries continues to remain a concern for the team management. He has not played an ODI match since March 2025.
The physical demands of ODI cricket are also much higher compared to T20 cricket. In the 50-over format, Hardik is expected to bowl longer spells and potentially complete his full quota of 10 overs when required.
Selectors Focus on Young Players Ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup
The selectors plan to use the upcoming bilateral series to finalize India’s ODI combination. The team management has made it clear that places will not be guaranteed, with every player expected to perform consistently to stay in contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Notably, the management wants to give Nitish Kumar Reddy more opportunities in the coming months. The 22-year-old all-rounder impressed with both bat and ball during IPL 2026, especially with his improved bowling performances.
Nitish Kumar Reddy is also expected to remain part of India’s plans for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The upcoming selection meeting on May 19 could become an important moment for Indian cricket as the selectors begin making long-term decisions for the next ODI World Cup cycle.
