Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel believes that all-rounder Axar Patel is currently leading the race over Ravindra Jadeja for a spot in India’s XI for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 later this June in the USA and West Indies.
Parthiv Patel’s comments have come in light of Axar Patel’s extraordinary performance in the ongoing 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Axar has bowled exceptionally well in this series and has been very accurate with his line length, something he is renowned for.
He can regularly bowl in tight areas and his disciplined bowling regime makes it difficult for batters to express themselves. Axar Patel also offers variety in his bowling from orthodox left-arm off spins to the flipper to the skitter. He can also vary in terms of pace and is capable of adapting to different conditions.
The all-rounder pulls his length back whenever he wants and bowls according to the situation and according to a batsman’s weakness. One of his biggest strengths is his economy rate, which is well below 8 in the shortest format and it was on display in the first 2 T20Is against Afghanistan as well.
In the 1st T20 at Mohali, Axar Patel despite very harsh weather bowled all 4 overs and leaked just 5.75 runs per over as India won by 6 wickets. In the 2nd T20 at Indore, Axar bowled even better and was also adjudged as the man of the match for figures of 2/17.
While his economy rate has always been impressive, another element that he brings with him is his reliant batting. Unlike Ravindra Jadeja who is more of a big hitter and ends up losing his wicket because of that, Axar Patel’s batting is more about patience, respect, and reliance.
He will not be hitting every ball as he knows how to respect a bowler. But whenever given the chance, Axar Patel doesn’t hesitate to stretch his arms and despite a lean body, he is more than capable of sending the ball very deep into the stands. He has performed consistently over the last couple of years and he will be desperate to feature in the upcoming T20 World Cup after missing out on a berth to the Cricket World Cup squad due to a quadriceps injury.
“In This Format, Axar Patel Is Better Than Ravindra Jadeja”, Parthiv Patel Opines On Possible All-Rounder Pick For T20 World Cup
While speaking to Jio Cinema, Parthiv Patel claimed that Axar Patel has become a more reliable option than Ravindra Jadeja in the shortest format. Often Axar has been considered as Jadeja’s under study but Parthiv feels that it is not the case anymore as Axar has well and truly come out of Jadeja’s shadow.
“In this format, yes. I think Axar brings in more variety. He doesn’t bowl in a one-dimensional way. He bats at any number. If you look at this Indian team, you need a power hitter, and Axar brings that. And in this format, Axar is ahead of Jadeja, as far as I am concerned.” – Parthiv said.
“His strength is the accuracy with which he bowls with. He doesn’t bowl in the slot, most of the time. If you want to hit him, you have to hit him use the feet or make room. And using feet is not easy against him because of the pace with which he bowls.” – Parthiv Patel concluded.
