In the latest news, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out of the upcoming home Test series against England. On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the first two Test matches in Chennai which will commence on 5th February.
Ravindra Jadeja was not named in the squad as he has undergone surgery on his dislocated left thumb. The left-hander injured his thumb as he copped a blow from a bouncer in the third Test in Sydney against Australia and consequently missed the fourth game in Brisbane.
According to a report in Indian Express, Ravindra Jadeja will need six weeks to recover after undergoing surgery, making him unavailable for the last two Tests in Ahmedabad as well.
Jadeja scored 85 runs and picked 7 wickets in the couple of Tests he played in Australia. A call will be taken later on Jadeja for the 5-match T20I series and 3-match ODI series which will follow the Test series.
Axar Patel selected as Ravindra Jadeja’s replacement against England
The selectors have given the nod to Axar Patel over Shahbaz Nadeem to replace Jadeja in the squad. Axar’s batting superiority over Nadeem would have tempted the selectors to go with the Gujarat all-rounder. Patel averages 35.42 with the bat and 27.38 with the ball in 39 First-Class matches.
Axar, who has played 38 ODIs and 11 T20Is, is selected alongside Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar, who was impressive in his debut at the Gabba.
The team is bolstered by the return of captain, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Ishant Sharma but will miss the services of Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav. Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin have been cleared to play after missing the Brisbane Test.
