The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has stated that the newly-appointed white-ball captain, Rohit Sharma, was the best choice and the deserving candidate for the role.

Last week, Rohit was officially announced as the ODI captain as well, having already been named the T20I captain. He took over from Virat Kohli, who has been in the media of late following the sacking. Speaking about Rohit on the show, ‘Backstage with Boria’, Ganguly said:

He deserves that position because of what he has done as captain. Five titles with Mumbai, another one with Deccan Chargers speaks volume of his ability under pressure.

“Once Virat decided he doesn’t want to be part of T20 leadership, he was the best choice. He started well, beating NZ 3-0 in India. Hopefully, we will see a better result for India next year than what we saw this year.”

Sourav Ganguly breaks silence on Virat Kohli issue

In Wednesday’s press conference ahead of the South Africa tour, Kohli revealed a few details regarding his sacking from the ODI captaincy. In addition, he said that nobody asked him to continue as the T20I captain, and his decision to relinquish T20I captaincy was met with praise.

This directly conflicts with what Ganguly said a few days ago. “I personally requested him (Kohli) not to give up the T20I captaincy. Obviously, he felt the workload. Which is fine, he has been a great cricketer, he has been very intense with his cricket. He has captained for a long period of time and these things happen,” Ganguly had said.

Kohli refuting these statements indicates that the working relationship between him and the board has deteriorated to a point of no return. Ganguly has also confirmed that the BCCI will decide how the matter should be dealt with.
