Rohit Sharma's future as Team India's Test captain is in doubt, according to reports. With just over a month left before the much-awaited five-match Test series between India and England gets underway, the selectors and the team management are reportedly set to take a big call.
Rohit Sharma's place in the Test team has been questioned by many after his dismal performance with the bat last season. Under his captaincy, India suffered a humiliating 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand. It was India's first Test series defeat at home since 2012-13.
India's Test squad for England to be announced soon
Later, India also suffered a 3-1 series defeat in Australia to lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2017. As a result of those two series defeats, Team India also failed to qualify for the WTC final for the first time.
Rohit Sharma's performance with the bat was poor as well. Unsurprisingly, there have been calls from several quarters to not only sack him as the Test captain but also drop him from the Test team.
Dark Clouds hover over Rohit Sharma's Test captaincy:
According to a report in the Times of India, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel has already started discussing the captaincy for the upcoming series against England. The squad is likely to be announced soon, and the selectors are presently busy deliberating over the captaincy issue.
The report further stated that a prominent member of the Indian team has already expressed his desire to lead the Test side. The BCCI, however, did not accept the player's proposal and made it clear that they want to groom a young player for the future.
Shubman Gill frontrunner to replace Rohit
The news outlet claimed that Shubman Gill is the front-runner to be included in the leadership group for the England Tests.
"A new WTC cycle is starting. Future and continuity has to be kept in mind as far as the team is concerned. Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he is likely to work with for an extended period."
"There can't be any stop-gap solutions for such an important series. The last two Test series haven't been ideal for the team, and the England series is very crucial," a source told the news outlet.
