On Monday, September 19, the 32-year-old Bangladesh National Cricket Team right-arm pace bowler Rubel Hossain announced his retirement from the purest format of the game, Test cricket.

The right-arm pacer Hossain made his Test debut for Bangladesh in July 2009 in the match against West Indies National Cricket Team at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent. Bangladesh won that game by 95 runs and Hossain was able to bag three wickets.

Overall, he bagged 36 Test wickets in 27 games at an average of 76.77, an economy of 3.92, and a strike rate of 117.3, including a five-wicket haul.

Meanwhile, Hossain took to Facebook to state that he has decided to officially retire from Test cricket to create opportunities for the youngsters in the longest format of the game. The 32-year-old added that representing the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in 27 Test games is a big achievement for him.

“Assalamualaikom. I wanted to inform an issue. I have officially submitted a letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and decided to retire from Test cricket,’ wrote Rubel on his verified Facebook account.”

“The longer version of cricket plays a big role in strengthening the national team’s pipeline. I think our pipeline will strengthen more if the young pacers get more opportunities.

“In order to provide the youngsters more opportunities in the red-ball format, I have decided to retire from Test cricket. I was able to able to play 27 Tests for Bangladesh, which is a big achievement for me,” he added.

Rubel Hossain further asserted that he has a lot of cricket left in him and he will continue to provide his services to the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in ODI and T20I formats. He also confirmed that he will continue to take part in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as well as other white-ball leagues.

“Those who have helped me during my journey with the red ball cricket, I am grateful to all of them and I hope I will get your support in the coming days as well. I may have retired from Test cricket but I believe I still have a lot to give in the ODI and T20I formats for Bangladesh.”

“I will continue playing in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) along with the other white-ball tournaments. Pray for me so that I can gift you with colourful dreams in white-ball formats.”

Rubel Hossain, who scored 265 runs in his Test career, played his last Test match in 2020 against Pakistan National Cricket Team at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
