Young South African batsman, Dewald Brevis recently got his maiden call for South Africa cricket for the T20I and ODI series between the Proteas and Australia. Brevis is compared with AB de Villiers for the same playing style and has already been nicknamed ‘Baby AB’.
However, the former Proteas skipper, AB de Villiers commented on the nickname given to the youngster and said that the Indian fans will give him his new short name soon.
While speaking on his official YouTube channel, the 39-year-old cricketer revealed the reason why he is called ‘Baby AB’ and said that both the former and the youngster have played together, and the Dewald Brevis wore the number 17 jersey for which the media people started to call him by the given nickname.
“He was referred to as ‘Baby AB’ before, we have worked together and he has No. 17 on his back so the press had a ball playing with that. But he would like to make up his own name which I absolutely love. He is a strong character and I don’t think he would like to be called Baby AB,” AB de Villiers said on Dewald Brevis.
Dewald Brevis made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2022 for the Mumbai-based franchise and played seven games for the team, where he scored 161 runs with a strike rate of 142.42.
The former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star player claimed that the more Brevis plays in the IPL, he will get his new nickname.
“He will find his own nickname down the line as he plays more IPL games. The Indian public will give him his nickname eventually,” AB de Villiers added.
It’s a huge breakthrough. I hope he gets game time.: AB de Villiers on Dewald Brevis
While talking about the 20-year-old’s maiden call in the national team, ABD said that it is a major breakthrough for his career.
The former Proteas player hopes that he will get more time in the playing eleven and added that has been in constant touch with the youngster.
“I am in touch with Brevis on a weekly basis and have worked with him before. Never expected him to jump this quickly, but very excited to see him in the Proteas squad. It’s a huge breakthrough. I hope he gets game time,” ABD further added.
Aiden Markram-led South Africa will lock horns against Pat Cummins’ Australia in the first 20-over match of the three-game series at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium Cricket Ground in Durban on Wednesday (August 30th).
