Shane Warne Hopes Ravichandran Ashwin And Nathan Lyon Achieve 1000 Test Wickets

Australia bowling great Shane Warne expressed his wish on seeing the modern-day spin bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin and Nathan Lyon claim 1000 Test wickets.

A spin bowler can use many variations in drifting the ball to deceive the opposition batters and get crucial breakthroughs for their teams.

In the current times, where the batter is just waiting to see a spin bowler against him so that he can free his wrists and score vividly against them. The spinner has to be smart, sharp and aggressive to fox the batter in his plan.

Ashwin and Lyon are two of the great spin bowlers who have been playing for their respective nations for more than a decade.

Interestingly both the bowlers have been established as the best red-ball bowlers of their teams and have been rivals to each other on the pitch for a long time.

Ashwin has scalped 430 Test wickets from 84 Tests and is just behind Kapil Dev (434) and Anil Kumble in the list of India’s highest Test wicket-takers.

Meanwhile, in the Ashes 2021, Lyon completed the feat of 400 Test wickets in the first match in Brisbane.

Australia’s spin wizard Shane Warne, who has 708 Test wickets next to his name wants both the players to achieve 1000 Test wickets.

“I hope both Ashwin and Lyon do (break Warne and Muralitharan’s record), because the more we see quality spin bowlers bowling, it makes for more interesting cricket. I think when you watch a pace bowler bowl real fast and a batter trying to take them on and then you see a really good spinner and that battle between him and a spinner,” Warne told Hindustan Times. 

“And you see that battle evolve. If you can see those two things in Test cricket, I think it becomes more entertaining. So if we can have that, then I hope Ashwin takes 1000 Test wickets, Lyon takes 1000 Test wickets. That would be fantastic,” he added.

Ashwin has picked 300 of his 430 Test wickets on Indian soil and holds the record of fastest bowler to pick 300 Test wickets in 54 matches.

Warne said that he has a great amount of respect for Ashwin and also credited him for everything the Tamil Nadu spinner has achieved.

“Ashwin is getting better and better. He has been fantastic. A true test of any cricketer is how they go away from home. Over a long period of time when you go to different countries and see how you perform overseas and then you end up having a record – both home and overseas, it gives you an idea as to how far you’ve come as a player. I am a big fan of Ashwin, the way he bowls. I think he is always trying to develop and explore different deliveries,” Warne mentioned.

Ashwin is currently ranked second in ICC’s Test bowling list with 839 ratings behind Australia Test captain Pat Cummins.
