India National Cricket Team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has achieved a huge milestone during the ongoing second ODI against the Afghanistan National Cricket Team on Wednesday, June 17, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Coming to bat at number five against Afghanistan, Iyer started aggressively and completed 3000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket and proved why he remains one of the most dependable batters in the middle order in the 50-over format. Before the milestone, Shreyas Iyer received massive praise from Mohammad Azharuddin.

As Yashasvi Jaiswal was drafted back into the playing XI, the recently appointed Indian T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and even Shubman Gill pushed back into the batting order in the ongoing second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow.

India’s new T20I captain came to bat in the 37th over after Ishan Kishan’s dismissal at 125 and started with a quick single. Since Gill was on full fire, having smashed a record century, Iyer didn’t have much, yet he managed to join the elite club featuring the likes of legendary Kapil Dev and Virender Sehwag.

The stylish right-hander reached the 3000-run mark in just 72 ODI innings, making him the joint second-fastest Indian batter to get there, which shows his remarkable consistency in the format.

Shreyas Iyer becomes joint second-fastest Indian to 3000 ODI runs

Well, Shreyas Iyer has entered an exclusive list of Indian batting stars by reaching the milestone of 3000 ODI runs. Since he achieved the feat in just 72 innings, the right-hander became the joint second-fastest Indian batter to reach the landmark alongside Shikhar Dhawan.

Only Shubman Gill has reached 3000 ODI runs faster for India, doing so in 62 innings. Virat Kohli took 75 innings, while KL Rahul and Navjot Sidhu needed 78 and 79 innings, respectively.

In terms of balls faced, the 31-year-old batter is now the third-fastest Indian to complete 3000 ODI runs. Kapil Dev remains the fastest, followed by Shubman Gill, while Iyer sits ahead of former explosive opener Virender Sehwag on the elite list.

Shreyas Iyer's historic day ends in disappointment

However, Iyer threw his wicket cheaply after reaching the milestone in Lucknow. Nangeyalia Kharoti removed the Indian batter when he was trying to accelerate the scoring. Kharoti bowled a full delivery straight at the stumps, and the Indian vice-captain attempted a big shot over the long-on boundary.

However, the ball was slightly too full, so Iyer could not get enough height on his shot. As a result, the ball went high but not far enough, and Ibrahim Zadran moved quickly to his right near the long-on region and completed a stunning catch as Iyer walked back after scoring 26 runs from 24 balls, including one four and one six in Lucknow.

Well, India posted a massive 402 runs on the board in the ongoing second ODI against Afghanistan, thanks to remarkable centuries from Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill. Rohit Sharma also contributed 48 runs in this huge total against Afghanistan. Nangeyalia Kharoti and Rashid Khan shared seven wickets against India in Lucknow.
