Indian batting stalwart Shreyas Iyer's comeback into the T20I side has been halted, as top sources close to the BCCI reveal his comeback ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 seems to be very difficult.
India batter Shreyas Iyer has been an absolute star in white-ball cricket and has shown commanding form in both formats for India and the franchise teams. Iyer, now a regular on the ODI side, has not yet been considered for a T20 comeback.
Iyer was last seen playing for India in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where he was the highest run-getter for the Men in Blue with 243 runs across 5 innings. A vital 48 in the final alongside the skipper led India to their third Champions Trophy title.

After back-to-back impressive performances in the IPL, with the Punjab Kings and a commanding presence in the Indian ODI side, Iyer was deemed likely for a T20 comeback this year.
Ever since his snub from the T20I side, Iyer has been spotted playing in the IPL, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and was recently seen captaining in the Mumbai League T20 as well and has repeatedly backed himself with commanding performances.
PTI sources confirm the Indian middle-order; No vacant spot left
The PTI sources have already revealed that the India batting order is likely to contain retained players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. The presence of these players means India has seemingly decided on their top 5.
With the no. 6 and no. 7 spots, there might be a competition between the likes of Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, all being deserving contenders for the role.
Axar Patel was appointed the vice-captain in the last T20I series against England; hence, his place in the side might be assured to some extent. While Dube might return in the absence of Nitish Kumar Reddy due to injury concerns.
Amid all these players, despite Shreyas Iyer's commanding form, there seems to be no vacant spot left in the side.
Shreyas' commanding IPL season with the Punjab Kings
Shreyas, the Mumbai cricketer with nearly 3700+ runs in the IPL, has played for three different franchises in the history of the IPL. The Delhi Capitals, after he made his debut in 2015, followed by the Kolkata Knight Riders and now the Punjab Kings.
This was his most impressive season with the bat, as he seemed to be carrying some great form since the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. He amassed 604 runs in 17 games with the highest score of 97* and 6 half-centuries. But what impressed more was his intent to score quick runs, as he batted with a strike rate of 175.07 and averaged over 50.
Other than his successful run as a batter, he enjoyed leading the Punjab Kings after having won the title with KKR in IPL 2024. Under his captaincy, Punjab Kings finished at the top of the points table with 9 wins in 14 matches and 19 points.
They qualified for just their second playoffs in 18 seasons and made it to the finals, where they lost by a narrow margin of 6 runs to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, as they missed out on their maiden title while Iyer missed out on a record to be the first IPL skipper to have led two different franchises to an IPL title.
