Shubman Gill Test
PC: X

Indian skipper Shubman Gill has received only praise until now for his historic knock with the bat in both innings of the Edgbaston Test. But for the first time, someone has come forward and openly criticized some aspect of his historic innings.

Former India legend Yuvraj Singh's father, Yograj Singh, is often known to have made the headlines for his controversial remarks on players. He has stepped up once again and stood against all to slam Shubman Gill for missing out on a triple hundred in the first innings.

Shubman Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings at Birmingham, as he missed on his maiden triple-century by a whisker of 31 runs. He could also be the third Indian to have reached the milestone, alongside Virender Sehwag (2) and Karun Nair (1), being the other Indians on the list of Test triple-centurions.

Yograj Singh labels Gill as 'criminal' for missing out on the 300

Yograj said that a player's hunger for more runs should never end, and a player should keep on scoring runs without setting a pre-assumed target in the mind.

"A player’s hunger should never die. Just saying ‘I’ve scored 200’ or ‘I’ve made 250’ — okay, well played, fine. But I never say ‘well played’. That’s your job, brother — but why did you get out?" questioned Yograj Singh, as quoted by TOI.

"Go make 300, then 350, even 400 — those will come too. But you have to try. My attitude is that getting out at any stage is a criminal offence, brother. How did you get out? Were you tired? Played a shot straight into someone’s hands?" the former player added.

However, after all, he praised Shubman Gill on his strong performance and his efforts of 7 years finally paying off in England.

"This player (Shubman) is really good, and maybe every Indian cricketer — all eleven — have come out of his training. So that’s a big thing for you, and for Shubman too. The hard work he’s put in over the last seven years is finally bearing fruit now," added the former cricketer's father.

Shubman Gill broke an array of records in his debut series as captain

Shubman Gill dazzled at Edgbaston, breaking off several records, like the most runs for India in England in a single Test, to the second-most runs scored by a batter in a single match in the history of the game.

More records that were added to his name were the first Indian batter since Sunil Gavaskar with a double century and a hundred in the same test match. He is also the first batter from India and just the second batter to score two 150+ scores across both innings of a test match.

Is the India vs England second Yest nearing a rain-washed draw?

Shubman Gill, the new Indian skipper, had the golden opportunity to win a test match in England and set the tone for their campaign before India advanced to Lord's for the third test.

Despite some stunning performances from various Indian players, the rain gods seemed to have favoured English batters, as the match was interrupted due to rain and a wet outfield on multiple occasions on Day 5. With lunchtime nearing, the players are yet to take the field on Day 5.
