Pakistan will be playing a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka to kick off the WTC 2023-25 cycle for both teams. Currently, India are leading the points table after their first Test win against West Indies.

Indian are topping the table followed by Australia, England and West Indies. Five of the top nine Test teams are yet to begin their next WTC cycle. Talking about the previous WTC cycle, Sri Lanka finished fifth with 64 points while Pakistan too had 64 points but they finished seventh.

SL had a better percentage point than PAK which is why they finished above the Men in Green. The Lankans had a chance to play the WTC final had they won the Test series against New Zealand. However, the Lankans lost the series which allowed India to get to the final.

The new WTC cycle allows all the teams to start from scratch. Pakistan will be travelling to the Lankan shores. They will be playing in batting-friendly conditions. Gradually the spinners from both sides will come into the game.

Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunatarne spoke about the importance of Test cricket in the country. The team will play just two Test matches against Pakistan and will play no more Test cricket this year. The first Test will be Sri Lanka’s fifth this year already and the next in Colombo will be their sixth.

Sri Lanka have announced a full-strength Test squad for the two-match Test series recalling Pathum Nissanka into the side. The Lankans won the ICC World Cup qualifiers and Nissanka played a big part in that scoring a couple of hundreds. Prabath Jayasuriya, Praveen Jayawickrama, Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka, Vishwa Fernando makes up a potent bowling attack.

For Pakistan, all eyes will be on Babar Azam’s captaincy once again. Under his captaincy, Pakistan lost at home against Australia and England in the previous WTC cycle. Imam Ul-Haq and Shan Masood make up the batting lineup. Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah are the premier bowlers for the series.
