Former Indian player Sunil Gavaskar again criticized Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. This time, he put the narrative around Gambhir for taking credit away from Shreyas Iyer after winning the IPL trophy last season with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Shreyas Iyer made history last night against the Rajasthan Royals when he became the first captain to lead three IPL franchises to the IPL playoffs.
Sunil Gavaskar criticises Gautam Gambhir
After Punjab Kings qualified for the playoffs this season, Sunil Gavaskar stated that the last time Iyer led his franchise to an IPL trophy win, he didn’t get the credit.
As per Sunil Gavaskar, all the credit was given to someone else (referring to Gambhir). Gautam Gambhir was the mentor of the champion KKR side in the last season. Fans and the experts gave the full credit as he made a few changes in the playing XI and helped KKR to win the title after 10 years.
"He didn't get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It's the captain who plays a major role in what's happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he's getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting," Sunil Gavaskar stated on Star Sports.
Sunil Gavaskar also highlighted that now, in the success of Punjab, no one is giving credit to their head coach, Ricky Pointing.
Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings to playoffs after 11 years
Shreyas Iyer proved his worth again in the new franchise as he led Punjab to the IPL playoffs after an 11-year-long wait. He also became the first skipper to lead three IPL teams to the knock-out stage of the IPL.
Punjab bought Iyer for a whopping price of INR 26.5 crore in the mega auction. He was coming into the auction as the defending IPL champion, and Punjab went all for him in the auction.
Shreyas Iyer missed IPL 2023 due to a back injury, but in the next season, he made a superb comeback and led KKR to lift the IPL trophy, and now in two successive IPL seasons, he has led his side to the Playoffs.
The Indian batter didn’t take any pressure from the price tag on him; he just played his aggressive cricket and backed his players on the ground.
Shreyas Iyer’s brilliance in IPL 2025
Iyer was coming into this season with a great show in the Champions Trophy 2025. He is in the form of his life as he was the highest run-getter for India in the Champions Trophy.
In IPL 2025, Iyer crossed the 400-run mark and managed to score 435 runs in 12 matches with a strike rate of 174.70. He also scored four fifty-plus scores this season.
Iyer will look to take Punjab into the final as they reached only once in the IPL final, which was way back in 2014.
Gujarat Titans won the match against the Delhi Capitals on May 18. Three teams, including Punjab, Gujarat, and Bengaluru, automatically qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs.
