India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav’s dip in form has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, starting on October 29 in Canberra. Once hailed as one of the most destructive T20 batters in the world, Suryakumar Yadav now finds himself battling poor form and growing criticism.

In 2025, the Indian captain’s numbers have been alarmingly low, amassing just 100 runs in 11 T20I innings at an average of 11.11. For a batter with more than 300 T20 innings and nearly 9,000 runs in his career, Suryakumar’s slump has left fans and experts bewildered.

Suryakumar Yadav’s form sparks major concern before Australia T20Is

Even in India’s successful Asia Cup 2025 campaign, the star batter’s contribution with the bat was far below expectations. He scored only 72 runs across six innings at a strike rate of just 104.22. What makes the story even more dramatic is the sharp contrast between his recent form in India and his blistering IPL 2025 season.

Just a few months earlier, he was at his absolute peak for the Mumbai Indians, amassing 717 runs at a strike rate of 167.9. But since then, things have gone downhill.

With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 set to take place next year, Suryakumar’s form has suddenly become one of the team’s biggest concerns before the Australia T20Is. The selectors and management continue to back him, and now the captain has defended himself too.

Suryakumar Yadav confident of making an impact on Australia tour

Ahead of the much-awaited T20I series between India and Australia, Suryakumar appeared calm and determined, brushing aside concerns about his recent poor form. Despite enduring a string of low scores recently, the Indian captain looked focused on rediscovering his rhythm with the bat.

The 35-year-old batter, who is known for his fearless batting style and explosive stroke play, shared that he has been practicing hard both at home and that he is confident that his hard work will soon translate into runs. The right-handed batter hopes to make a big impact in Australia.

Suryakumar Yadav said at the pre-match press conference, “I feel like I have been working really hard. It’s not that I wasn’t working hard before; I was doing it then also. And I am still working hard. I have had a good few sessions back home and a good 2-3 sessions here.

So, I am in a good space. I think that is really important. Runs, it will come eventually. But I think working hard towards a team goal. It is more important what the team wants from you in different situations, and I take one game at a time. If it starts, then I think it will be a good thing.”

Suryakumar Yadav gives a positive update on Shreyas Iyer

The Indian captain also shared an update on Shreyas Iyer, who is battling a life-threatening ribcage injury that he sustained during the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney.

Suryakumar said, “He's recovering well. He's replying to us on the phone; that means he is doing absolutely fine.”
