The Board Has Decided To Conduct The Ranji Trophy This Season In Two Phases – Jay Shah

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the upcoming season of the Ranji Trophy would be conducted in two phases.

The marquee domestic competition, Ranji Trophy, which was set to commence in January, was postponed on January 4 due to the increase in Covid-19 cases in the country. Also, the tournament was not held last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, on Friday Jay Shah said that the BCCI has decided that the upcoming season of the Ranji Trophy would be held in two phases. In the first phase, all the league stage games will take place and in June the knockouts games will be played.

“The Board has decided to conduct the Ranji Trophy this season in two phases. In the first phase, we plan to complete all matches of the league stage while the knockouts will be held in June.

“My team is working closely to mitigate any kind of health risk caused by the pandemic, while at the same time ensuring a highly competitive red-ball cricket contest,” Jay Shah said in an official statement.

Previously, the former India head coach Ravi Shastri has stated that the Ranji Trophy is the backbone of Indian cricket and it shouldn’t be ignored. Shastri on Twitter wrote:

“The Ranji Trophy is the backbone of Indian cricket. The moment you start ignoring it, our cricket will be SPINELESS.”
