Former Indian national chief selector MSK Prasad explained the difference between leg spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Rahul Chahar in the T20 World Cup squad selection.
Chahal has bowled brilliantly in his last two matches in IPL 2021. First, he bowled a game-changing spell of 3/11 against Mumbai Indians and continued his form in the next match against Rajasthan Royals, where he returned with the figures of 2/11.
I think Yuzvendra Chahal is our best T20 bowler in terms of wickets: MSK Prasad
The current Indian selectors overlooked Chahal for the upcoming T20 World Cup, where they preferred Mumbai Indians spinner Rahul Chahar over him. However, Prasad feels that Chahal had to lose his spot to Chahar.
“I think he is our best T20 bowler in terms of wickets. He has done superbly in the last 4-5 years. Fortunately, or unfortunately, what the selectors must have thought is the competition between Rahul Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahal. On flat wickets like in Bangalore, he (Chahal) has never disappointed his captain Virat, and he’s always given you wickets,” Prasad told Sports Tak.
Rahul Chahar, on the other hand, has played an important role for Mumbai Indias: MSK Prasad
Chahar is currently struggling with his form as he picked only a couple of wickets since the IPL 2021 resumed and subsequently, he was dropped from the Mumbai Indians team in the last match against Delhi Capitals.
MSK Prasad feels that Chahar, who claimed four wickets in the two T20I games he played in the Sri Lanka tour, had performed better than his contender over the last year, and that’s where the selectors made the difference.
“But if you see his performance in the last year, year and a half, there is a little dip in his performance. Rahul Chahar, on the other hand, has played an important role in winning back-to-back IPL titles for Mumbai Indians. Probably that went on Chahar’s favour,” Prasad added.
Chahal picked seven wickets in the last four games, which takes his tally to 11 wickets in the tournament; it shows an immense change in his bowling after going through a rough patch in the first leg.
