Think It's Been Almost Embarrassing The Way CA Handled The Two Cases- Ricky Ponting On Justin Langer, Tim Paine Cases
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has lashed out at Cricket Australia (CA) for handling Justin Langer’s contract extension as the head coach and Tim Paine’s sexting scandal poorly.
After months of speculation regarding Langer’s position as the coach, it was expected that CA would extend the 51-year-old’s contract. However, they opted to give a short-term offer which led to Langer rejecting it and resigning with immediate effect.
“It’s been a really poor six months with the way Cricket Australia have handled some of the better people in Australian cricket. Those being Justin Langer and Tim Paine (at the start of the summer). I think it’s been almost embarrassing the way they handled those two cases.”
“That’s been enough to force a man that has put his life and heart and soul into Australian cricket. And (someone who has) done a sensational job of turning around the culture and the way the Australian cricket team has been looked at over the past three or four years. I actually think it’s a really sad day as far as Australian cricket is concerned,” Ponting told ABC.
Matthew Hayden echoes Ricky Ponting’s sentiment
Apart from Ponting, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist were among the others who were disappointed with the way a World Cup-winning coach was treated. Langer’s stint comes to an end with the Aussies winning the Ashes series 4-0.
“It could have been a much tighter process. We’re not talking about a rookie. We’re talking about a legend of the game, a centurion, an Ashes-winning and World Cup-winning coach. Imagine if this was Wayne Bennett who had a championship-winning year, he’d be on the podium right now (being celebrated).”
“How do you reckon he’s going? If you listen to the Australian captain the other day not mention once any kind of commendation or support for him, I don’t think he would be going very well. Because that would be extremely hurtful,” Hayden also told ABC.
