Legendary India National Cricket Team batter Sunil Gavaskar has showered praise on the 23-year-old top-order batter Prithvi Shaw, who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), after his terrific triple ton in the ongoing season of the Ranji Trophy.
Prithvi Shaw, who smashed a century on his Test debut, registered a record-setting triple century in the Elite Group B match against Assam at the Amingaon Cricket Ground in Guwahati. He scored tremendous 379 runs off 383 balls, including 49 fours and 4 sixes. He batted with a strike rate of 98.95, before being cleaned up by Riyan Parag in the 126th over. Shaw’s remarkable triple ton and Ajinkya Rahane’s amazing 191 helped Mumbai post a humongous 687/4 on the board.

During the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Gavaskar gave a special mention to Shaw on-air. The legendary batter said that it is important for the batters in the domestic circuit to register gigantic scores to grab the attention of the selection committee and Shaw exactly did that with his knock against Assam.
“This is what was needed from him, he was scoring lovely 60s-70s. So many people were scoring 60s-70s. If you really want to grab the attention of the selection committee. Get the bigger hundreds, the double and triple hundreds. He almost got a 400, that would have been fantastic if he had gotten a 400-plus score,” Gavaskar said on air during India vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI.

There will have always been a temptation to go for that 443 – Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar further stated that Prithvi Shaw would have been tempted to surpass Bhausaheb Babasaheb Nimbalkar’s 443*, which is the highest score by an Indian in the history of first-class cricket.
“I think he might have made it difficult for Mumbai to think about the declaration. Because then, he would have been close to the highest-ever score by an Indian (443 not-out) in first-class cricket. There will have always been a temptation to go for that 443. It’s a very tough call,” Gavaskar added.
The 23-year-old Shaw is completely out of India’s scheme of things in all three formats of the game. He last played Test cricket in 2020 against Australia in Adelaide. His last ODI came against Sri Lanka in 2021 and his sole T20I game was also in the same series.
