'Tilak Varma Was Mad About Suresh Raina'- Childhood Coach Salam Bayash

Tilak Varma’s childhood coach Salam Bayash has revealed that the left-handed batsman was mad about Suresh Raina during his young days. Bayash also recalled how he set up Tilak Varma’s meeting with Suresh Raina as a surprise gift for him.

Tilak Varma has been picked in the squad for India vs West Indies T20I series. The left-handed batsman got a national call-up after his marvelous performance in the last two IPL seasons. Varma is also part of the Indian squad for Asian Games 2023, which takes place later in September-October this year.

IND vs WI: Tilak Varma Was Mad About Suresh Raina- Childhood Coach Salam Bayash

During an interview with Times of India, Tilak Varma’s childhood coach Salam Bayash said that Salam Bayash was mad about Suresh Raina during his childhood.

“He was mad about Raina. I wanted him to show his class in one-day school leagues. I lured him by saying, if you score a century in this league, I will give you a big gift. And he did score a century. After some days, CSK came to play SRH in an IPL game.

I had already spoken to some officials and requested him to let Tilak be a ball boy in that match. I took Tilak to the stadium and took him to a dedicated area, and he was given a jersey and the duty of being a ball boy for the match”, Bayash said.

Salam Bayash also recalled that he set up Tilak Varma’s meeting with Suresh Raina after the match as a surprise gift.

“[Suresh] Raina was playing in that match. That was a gift from me to him. I had another gift for him. After the match, he met Raina as well. Tilak was just delighted to meet him. He touched his feet and took many tips from him,” Salam Bayash further said.

Tilak Varma grabbed the limelight with back-to-back successful seasons for Mumbai Indians in Indian Premier League. The 20-year-old batter smacked 397 runs in 14 games in IPL 2022 at an average of 36.09. In IPL 2023, the middle-order batsman shattered 343 runs in 11 games at a stunning strike rate of 164+.

Tilak Varma has made his entry into the national team with India vs West Indies T20I series. Since Team India will play a total of five T20I games during the away series, Varma is highly likely to make his international debut too.
