After starting his Test career with a five-wicket haul, left-arm spinner Axar Patel snared a six-wicket haul to skittle England for 112 on the first day of the first innings of the third Test in Ahmedabad. Axar Patel was undoubtedly England’s batting line-up’s chief destroyer as they struggled on a pitch that did not provide too much assistance. Twitter users lauded the left-arm spinner for his outstanding work in only his second Test.

Axar Patel began his journey to a six-wicket haul by dismissing Jonny Bairstow for a duck. Jonny Bairstow, who replaced Dan Lawrence in the line-up, lasted nine balls for no run before Patel struck him lbw. The keeper-batsman’s decision to review did not pay off. By the time lunch arrived, Axar had snapped two out of the four wickets to fall.

Axar’s second victim as Zak Crawley, who was one of the four batsmen to cross double figures and top-score for the visitors. Crawley played magnificently for his half-century, hitting 11 boundaries in his 84-ball 53 before the 27-year old pinned him right in front. Axar went on to remove England’s vice-captain, Ben Stokes, as he played on the backfoot for a non-turning delivery. Stokes, who repeatedly became Ravichandran Ashwin’s victim, was out to the left-arm spinner.

The Gujarat-born spin-bowler’s next three victims were Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, and keeper-batsman Ben Foakes, as England lasted only 48.4 overs after choosing to bat first. Axar took six scalps while Ashwin and Ishant Sharma ended with three and one respectively. More importantly, Axar did not even let India feel the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, who is set to miss the entire Test series.

Below is how Twitter reacted to Axar Patel’s figures of 22-6-38-6 in his second Test:
