Australian opener David Warner is all set to retire from Test cricket after the Pakistan series. The fourth and final Test match at the SCG will be his last Test for Australia. He will need to be in good fitness to play all the Test matches.
David Warner recently won the World Cup with the Australian team. This was his second World Cup with the team in a career-spanning close to 15 years. The 2023 World Cup was his third for the national team. Warner is set to play his last Test at his home ground in Sydney against Pakistan which is the last of the three Tests.
Australia have already named the squad for the Test series. Lance Morris is the only uncapped player named in the 14-man Test squad for the Perth Test. Pakistan, who had a tough World Cup will now need to play good cricket to beat the Aussies in their own backyard.
Meanwhile, Usman Khawaja spoke about David Warner and his Test career so far. He also spoke about life after David Warnert in the Test arena as he spoke about his next batting partner.
Cant Pick Teams And Players On Form: Usman Khawaja on Life After David Warner
Khawaja isn’t too concerned about his next opening partner but urged the selectors to pick the right player who can flourish and succeed at the international level.
“To be honest, it (who my next opening partner is) doesn’t really matter to me, genuinely. Whoever the selectors are going to pick, they’re going to pick because they think they’re the best for the role,” Khawaja told on SEN Radio.
“I don’t even believe in the ‘bat-off’ people are talking about right now. I think it is going to come to a lot more than that. You can’t pick teams on form. You’ve got to pick teams on who you think the best player is he further added.
He further urged the selectors to not pick players on their current form and to have long-term thought behind the selection of certain players.
“If we pick teams on form, the Australian team would be changing every second week, so you just can’t do that. But I think if you go a bit further back for the last five years, all of the guys that are in contention would have scored a truckload of runs. It would be very similar. It just depends on how big a sample size you want to make it” Khawaja concluded saying.
The first Test in Perth begins in Sydney on December 14. The final Test in Sydney starts on January 03.
