Wasim Jaffer shared his opinions on the number three batter for India in the T20Is. Shreyas Iyer came up with a remarkable batting show at No. 3 in the recently-concluded India vs Sri Lanka T20I series. After his outstanding batting strength at the one-down position, many cricket fans engaged in discussions about whether Iyer should bat at the same spot in the future as well.
Virat Kohli was given a rest in the IND vs SL T20I series. Other players like Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav also were absent from the series. As a result, Shreyas Iyer was given an opportunity to bat at the no.3 spot. The right-handed batsman slammed 57 (28), 74 (44), and 73 (45) in the three matches, all of them being unbeaten knocks.
A Good Headache For The People Who Matter: Wasim Jaffer
While speaking to ESPNCricinfo, former India Test batter Wasim Jaffer shared his opinions on the matter. Jaffer said that it is going to be a good headache for the selectors when Virat Kohli comes back.
“He (Shreyas Iyer) was outstanding right throughout the series, didn’t get out even a single game, and literally pulled the series by himself.
“Really really happy with the way he’s shown confidence, the way he’s taken the responsibility, which just adds a little bit of a good headache for the Indian management – what to do with Shreyas Iyer when Virat Kohli comes back?”, Wasim Jaffer said.
Jaffer also mentioned that Kohli supersedes Shreyas Iyer at the no.3 spot. He also pointed out that management cannot ignore Iyer after his spectacular performance in India vs Sri Lanka T20I series and they need to find a way to induct him into the playing XI with many outstanding middle-order batsmen in the team.
“I think it’s going to be a challenge. Obviously, Virat supersedes Shreyas Iyer without a doubt. But you would want to squeeze in Shreyas Iyer in this 11 looking at his current. But who goes out? …
“Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Venkatesh Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja coming back – all those guys – it’s going to be hard to pick those six or seven batters. A good headache for the people who matter,” Wasim Jaffer further said.
Smashing 204 runs in India vs Sri Lanka T20I series, Shreyas Iyer also won the player of the series award. He also won the player of the match award in 2nd and 3rd T20I. India defeated Sri Lanka in the 1st T20I by 62 runs. The Rohit Sharma-led side won the 2nd and 3rd T20I by 7 and 6 wickets respectively.
With a 3-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka, India also registered their 12th straight victory in the shortest format. Earlier, India defeated West Indies and New Zealand in a T20I series 3-0, clinching a whitewash. India will next face Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series, starting with the opening game on March 4 in Mohali.
