Veteran batter Virat Kohli is close to achieving another monumental feat in his career. Kohli is just 35 away from reaching 27,000 runs in international cricket. Currently, he has 26,965 runs to his name in 534 international matches at an average of 53.18.

If Kohli scores 35 runs in the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh, he will become the fastest batter in the world to achieve this historic feat. Kohli has scored 8871 runs in Tests, 13906 runs in ODIs, and 4188 runs in T20Is so far.

Virat Kohli on the brink of surpassing Sachin Tendulkar

Currently, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar holds the world record for reaching the 27,000-run mark in the fewest innings as he achieved this feat in his 623rd inning. Meanwhile, Kohli will be playing his 594th inning during the second Test against Bangladesh.

Tendulkar also leads the tally by a massive margin and no one comes near to him. He has scored 34,357 runs, Sangakkara has 28,016 runs, and Ponting has scored 27,483 runs in their respective international careers. Mahela Jayawardene is below Virat Kohli at No. 5 in this list with 25,957 runs.

Most runs in international cricket

  1. Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 34,357 runs
  2. Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 28,016 runs
  3. Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 27,483 runs
  4. Virat Kohli (India) – 26,965 runs
  5. Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 25,957 runs

Kohli has been a stalwart for India for more than a decade and has been a consistent performer across formats. Whether it's the Tests, ODIs, or T20Is, Kohli has a brilliant average in all te formats.

If Virat Kohli scores 35 more runs, he will also become the fourth batter overall to reach the 27,000-run mark in international cricket. Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, and Ricky Ponting have already achieved this feat.

Another record insight for Virat Kohli

Meanwhile, Kohli will also have an eye on another record in Kanpur. The 35-year-old needs just 129 more runs to reach the 9000-run mark in Test cricket. Kohli currently has 8,871 runs to his name in 114 Tests.

If he reaches the 9000-run mark, he will become the fourth Indian batter to achieve this monumental feat after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar. Tendulkar is easily the all-time highest run-scorer not only for India but also for the world.

Tendulkar scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests, Dravid scored 13.265 runs in 163 Tests, and Gavaskar finished his career with 10,122 runs in 125 Tests. Gavaskar also holds the world record for being the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

Virat Kohli also has 29 hundreds to his name in Test cricket and if he scores one more at Kanpur, he will become the third cricketer to score 30 or more hundreds in both the Tests and ODis after Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.

Kohli has 29 hundreds in Tests and 50 hundreds in ODIs to his name. Meanwhile, Tendulkar scored 51 hundreds in Tests and 49 hundreds in ODIs. Ponting scored 41 hundreds in Tests and 30 in ODI cricket.
