Former India batter and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) head, VVS Laxman, is likely to get actively involved in India Women’s Cricket and play a bigger role in mentoring next generation cricketers after Ramesh Powar’s exit from the team.

The India Women’s National Cricket Team failed to make it to the semi-finals of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2022. The Mithali Raj-led India lost their final group stage game in a thriller encounter against South Africa by 3 wickets at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Sunday, Mar 27, 2022, to get knocked out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the contract of Indian women’s team head coach Ramesh Powar also expired after India’s exit from the tournament.

“Powar’s contract was till World Cup. There is no provision for extension. So the entire process starts with applications and interviews. Powar can certainly reapply and CAC (Cricket Advisory Committee), as per the constitution, will take a call,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Notably, Powar got the head coach job in the India Women’s National Cricket Team after the exit of WV Raman, who had guided the team to the final of the T20 World Cup 2020. The cricket fraternity was shocked after Raman was not offered the extension after a good performance.

“The CAC takes the call and if they felt Ramesh would do better than Raman, it was their call. The board can’t interfere,” the source said.

Also, there were tensions between two senior Indian women’s cricketers after the series in New Zealand and the head coach Powar did very little to defuse the tension between the duo, as per PTI.

The former India batter and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) head, VVS Laxman, will be playing a bigger role in making long-term plans for the India Women’s National Cricket Team.

Also, the inaugural U-19 women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin next year and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants to prepare the next batch of players under Laxman’s guidance.

Meanwhile, finding veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami’s replacement is one of the toughest jobs for the board.

“Even if you move past Mithali, in case of Jhulan there aren’t too many replacements. So that’s also a problem that the board is facing. Hopefully, the planned WIPL will unearth enough talent for the future,” the source said.
