The International Cricket Council (ICC) named Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga as the winner of the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for June 2023. Wanindu Hasaranga’s outstanding performances in international cricket in the month of June earned him this prestigious award.

Wanindu Hasaranga showcased exceptional bowling skills during the World Cup Qualifiers. The right-arm leg spinner was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s triumph in the tournament, securing their qualification for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which is set to take place in India later this year.

Extremely Happy With This Award – Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga expressed delight after winning the award and said it came at a crucial time for Sri Lanka.

“I am extremely happy with this award, and it comes at an important moment for Sri Lanka Cricket, after we made it to the Cricket World Cup in India. I am privileged and honoured to have been chosen as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month,” said Hasaranga.

Wanindu Hasaranga picked up 26 wickets at an impressive average of 10 during the month. The all-rounder took 22 wickets in seven matches at the Qualifiers in Zimbabwe with an average of 12.90. He recorded his career-best figures of 6 for 24 against the UAE.

The 25-year-old was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. He achieved a remarkable feat by becoming only the second bowler in the history of ODI cricket, after Waqar Younis, to claim three consecutive five-wicket hauls in the 50-over format.

The spin-bowling all-rounder picked up six wickets against the UAE, followed by two more five-wicket hauls against Oman and Ireland. The right-handed batter also made a valuable contribution with the bat, scoring 91 runs during the month of June.

Ashleigh Gardner was named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for June 2023. Gardner expressed her gratitude and highlighted the importance of the team’s victory in an Ashes Test match at Trent Bridge.

“Thank you to everyone who voted me the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. To win an Ashes Test match at Trent Bridge was a special moment for our team and I’m happy I was able to contribute towards the win,” Gardner said.

“Winning a Test match overseas is one of the biggest challenges in cricket, it’s certainly a game that we will remember for a long time to come,” she added.

Ashleigh Gardner picked up 12 wickets in the one-off Test against England at Trent Bridge. She recorded the second-best bowling figures in women’s Test cricket history (12/165).

She registered figures of 8/66 in the second innings to help the team beat Australia by 89 runs. She scored 40 runs in the first innings and formed a 77-run partnership with Annabel Sutherland (137).
