Australia, on Sunday (June 16), managed to stay away from any controversy by beating Scotland in their final group game of the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

While Australia had already qualified for the Super 8s of the tournament by winning their first three games, the game garnered a lot of attention because of its importance for the other teams. Australia's bitter rivals, England's fate depended on the match. An unexpected loss for Australia would have dumped England out of the T20 World Cup.

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood had also caused a big controversy by openly admitting that his team would not shy away from manipulating the game to ensure that England are knocked out of the T20 World Cup. However, the reigning Test and ODI world champions went on to beat Scotland by 5 wickets to knock them out of the T20 World Cup and confirmed England's passage to the next round.

However, before the win, Australia had raised a number of eyebrows with their poor fielding efforts. Known as one of the best fielding units in world cricket, Australia had a day to forget on the field as their players dropped a number of catches.

Australia dropped as many as six catches during the match and set the record for most number of catches dropped by a team in a T20 World Cup match.

Here is a clip showing the catches dropped by the Australian players:

As far as the game is concerned, Scotland came up with a valiant effort but eventually ended up on the losing side as Australia proved too good for them. Asked to bat first, Scotland scored 180 for 5 in the allotted 20 overs thanks to a fifty from Brandon McMullen who scored 60 runs with the help of 2 fours and 6 sixes.

In reply, Australia chased down the total with two balls remaining. Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis scored half-centuries for Australia. At one stage, Australia were reeling at 92 for 3 after 13 overs, needing 89 runs from the final seven overs. However, Stoinis and Head went on to score fine fifties to power their team to a win.
