Pat Cummins unfold the big drama at the MCG
The drama unfolded in the 71st over of India’s chase as Pat Cummins delivered a short ball, aimed at Yashasvi Jaiswal’s leg, with the field perfectly set for the shot. Jaiswal tried to pull, but the ball got the bottom edge of his glove and went straight to the wicketkeeper, Alex Carey, who dived forward to take a brilliant catch just inches off the ground.

Although the on-field umpire didn’t believe there was any edge, the Australian cricketers were confident and decided to review the decision, resulting in the third umpire coming into the picture. The replays showed no spike on the ball-tracking system or any clear sound to indicate that the ball had hit Yashasvi Jaiswal's bat.
But the third umpire said that the ball had clearly deviated due to contact with the bottom of the glove and relied on the visual evidence and overturned the decision, as Yashasvi Jaiswal had to leave after making 84 runs off 208 balls, with 8 boundaries to his name.
India's batting collapse stun cricket world
Meanwhile, Australia completed a stunning victory to take a 2-1 lead in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, and much credit goes to their incredible performance on Day 5 against India in Melbourne. After tea break on Day 5, India was 112 for 3, but once Rishabh Pant was dismissed, things quickly fell apart for the touring side in the thrilling MCG showdown.
The Indian cricket team lost their last seven wickets for just 34 runs in only 20.3 overs. It was an unexpected collapse, especially with the fact that India had world-class batters, and it only highlighted the threat posed by Australia’s world-class bowling attack led by the skipper, Pat Cummins.
Australia has been dominant throughout most of the ongoing five-match Test series against India at home, and with a 2-1 lead heading into the New Year’s Test, they are in a strong position to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after more than a decade.
Rohit Sharma reacts to India's defeat against Australia in the MCG Test
After the loss, Rohit Sharma stated: “It is pretty disappointing. It's not that we went in with the intent of giving up the fight. We wanted to fight till the end and unfortunately, we couldn't do it. It'll be tough to assess just the last two sessions. If you look at the overall Test match, we had our chances, but we didn't take them. We know things can get tough, but we want to play tough cricket from hard situations. We were not just good enough.”
