On Sunday, January 29, the Indian team made history by winning the first U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Potchefstroom after defeating England in the championship match.
With the exception of a hiccup against Australia in Super Six, the Shafali Verma-led team was outstanding, particularly the bowlers who didn’t allow batters of teams like Sri Lanka, New Zealand in the semifinals, or England in the championship match to make much of an impact. On Sunday as well, the bowlers held England to a meager 68 and finished off the run chase in six overs and seven wickets.

Rahul Dravid And Prithvi Shaw Congratulate India U-19 Women’s Team
Reactions poured in as soon as the Verma-led squad cemented its place in history, and the senior men’s team had a word for them as well.
“Today was a landmark day for the Indian women’s Under-19 team and they had a fantastic day,” Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian side, made this statement after the second T20I match against New Zealand in Lucknow, which the BCCI released online. Dravid then handed the microphone to Prithvi Shaw, the 2018 World Cup champion of the Indian U-19 boys’ squad.

“I think it’s a great achievement and everyone wants to congratulate the U-19 women’s team. So, congratulations,” Shaw spoke as the room filled with echoes of congratulations. The T20 skipper Hardik Pandya and his deputy Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, took a great interest in hearing what the former U-19 World Cup-winning captain had to say as Shaw took the microphone.

Surya, Shaw’s Mumbai partner in domestic cricket, stood directly behind him and leaned forward to listen to him, while skipper Hardik was on the young opener’s extreme left and also leaned forward in anticipation.
When the senior women’s team lost the T20 World Cup final in 2020 to Australia, young Shafali, who turned 19 the day before the World Cup final, broke down in tears.
On Sunday, however, her tears were ones of delight and happiness. The senior men’s squad will play New Zealand in the third Twenty20 International on February 1 in Ahmedabad, and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah offered an incentive of INR 5 crore for the entire team.
