Former Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson was dismissed for a second-ball duck on day 2 of the first Test in Wellington. Williamson was dismissed on the second ball trying to get off the mark as he fell short of reaching the other end.
It was a comedy of errors as Williamson and Will Young ran into each other in the last ball of the fifth over bowled by Mitchell Starc. Williamson pushed it too long off and ran for a single, Young on the other end was ball-watching as he ran into Williamson.
Marnus Labuschagne who fielded the ball hit the stumps directly to catch Williamson short of his ground. The batter seemed in a bit of discomfort as he was talking off the ground after his collision with Will Young.
New Zealand had a disastrous start to their innings in response to Australia’s total of 383. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were finally bowled out for 179.
The run out of Williamson who could have weathered the storm from the Aussies pacers opened the floodgates for the visitors. Williamson headed into this series scoring 403 runs in the two-match Test series against South Africa with centuries in both Test matches.

Glenn Phillips was the top-scorer in the innings scoring 71 off 70 balls. Tom Blundell scored 33 while Matt Henry scored 42 batting lower down the order. All the Australian bowlers go wickets with Nathan Lyon taking four, Josh Hazlewood two, and Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood taking one each.
After bowling out the Kiwis for just 179, Australia in their second innings is leading by over 200 runs. The Aussies had a huge turnaround on day 2 after finishing 279/9 in 85 overs on day 1. Camron Green scored an unbeaten 174 and added a 104-run stand with Josh Hazlewood who scored 22 with the bat.
The partnership gave Australia a lot of headway into the Test match/. The bowlers then bundling out New Zealand for just 179 added the cherry on top for the visitors. The Kiwis are now in deep trouble as they need to limit Australia to a manageable score that they can chase in the second innings.
Unfortunately, Steve Smith was again dismissed cheaply as he went out to open the innings with Usman Khawaja. His average has significantly dropped since he was chosen as the next opener in Test cricket for Australia.
He has scores of 12, 11*, 6, 31, and 0 as an opener since the series against West Indies last year. He scored an unbeaten 91 in the second innings of the Gabba Test last year.
Talking about New Zealand, they have won just 8 Test matches against Australia in the previous 60 Test matches while Australia won 34. They have not won a Test match at home against the Aussies since 1993. They won their last Test against Australia some 15 years ago.
Also at home, they have won just five Test matches against Australia while the Aussies won 14 in New Zealand. The Kiwis are topping the WTC points table heading into this Test series.
Australia meanwhile placed third. The India vs England series is going on subsequently with India placed second on the points table while England is eighth.
